Modeling interactions between tides, storm surges, and river discharges in the Kapuas River delta

چکیده
Abstract. The Kapuas River delta is a unique estuary system on the western coast of island Borneo, Indonesia. Its hydrodynamics are driven by an interplay between storm surges, tides, and river discharges. These interactions likely to be exacerbated global warming, leading more frequent compound flooding in area. mechanisms driving events remain, however, poorly known. Here we attempt fill this gap assessing discharges, surges how they can drive inundation over riverbanks, particularly within Pontianak, main city along River. We simulated these using multi-scale hydrodynamic model SLIM (Second-generation Louvain-la-Neuve Ice-ocean Model). Our correctly reproduces River's its with tides surge from Karimata Strait. considered several extreme-scenario test cases evaluate impact tide–storm–discharge maximum water level profile mouth upstream part river. Based profiles, divide stream into three zones, i.e., tidally dominated region (from about 30 km upstream), transition 150 river-dominated (beyond upstream). Thus, local management define proper mitigation for handling hazards riverbanks zoning category. also successfully reproduced event which occurred 29 December 2018. For event, wind-generated appeared dominant trigger.

Modeling Flood Inundation Induced by River Flow and Storm Surges over a River Basin
Low-lying coastal regions and their populations are at risk during storm surge events and high freshwater discharges from upriver. An integrated storm surge and flood inundation modeling system was used to simulate storm surge and inundation in the Tsengwen River basin and the adjacent coastal area in southern Taiwan. A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model with an unstructured grid was used, wh...
متن کاملInterplay between river discharge and tides in a delta distributary
The hydrodynamics of distributary channels has tremendous impact on nutrient and dissolved oxygen circulation, transport of sediments, and delta formation and evolution; yet many processes acting at the river–marine interface of a delta are poorly understood. This paper investigates the combined effect of river hydrograph and micro-tides on the hydrodynamics of a delta distributary. As the rati...
متن کاملModeling river delta formation.
A model to simulate the time evolution of river delta formation process is presented. It is based on the continuity equation for water and sediment flow and a phenomenological sedimentation/erosion law. Different delta types are reproduced by using different parameters and erosion rules. The structures of the calculated patterns are analyzed in space and time and compared with real data pattern...
متن کاملEcological and Toxicological Conditions in the Delta Volga River
The decrease in the level of industrial production and the significant reduction of highly toxic substances used in the agriculture of the Volga region in the last decade did not maintain the expected decrease of pollution level in the Volga water. Concentration of many polluting substances in water continues to remain high. Among the numerous polluting substances in the Volga River two groups ...
